Overview
Liatris Spicata - bulbs
Liatris spicata, also known as Blazing Star or Gayfeather, is a striking perennial that brings vertical interest and vibrant colour to UK gardens. Its tall, feathery spikes of purple or white flowers bloom from midsummer to early autumn, making it a standout choice for borders, beds, and naturalistic planting schemes. Beloved by bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, Liatris spicata is perfect for wildlife-friendly gardens and makes an excellent cut flower for indoor arrangements. Hardy, low-maintenance, and drought-tolerant once established, this plant is ideal for adding height and texture to sunny garden spaces.
The flowers of Liatris spicata grow in dense, bottlebrush-like spikes that can reach heights of 60-90cm. Each spike is adorned with tiny, star-like blooms in vibrant purple or white, opening from the top downward, creating a distinctive and eye-catching effect. The slender, grass-like foliage forms a neat clump at the base, providing an attractive contrast to the tall flower spikes. These elegant blooms are long-lasting and attract pollinators, making them as beneficial as they are beautiful.
How to Grow
Planting: Plant Liatris spicata bulbs (corms) in spring for summer flowering. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil; they thrive in full sun but can tolerate light shade. Plant corms about 5-10cm deep and space them 10-15cm apart, grouping them in clusters for a naturalised look.
Watering: Water the corms thoroughly after planting to help them establish. Once they are growing, Liatris is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods to maintain vibrant blooms.
Feeding: A light application of balanced fertiliser in early spring can promote healthy growth and flowering. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to weaker stems. Adding a mulch of compost around the base of the plant can also improve soil quality.
Staking: In windy or exposed locations, tall flower spikes may require light staking to prevent bending. Use unobtrusive stakes or plant supports to keep them upright.
Deadheading and Maintenance: Remove faded flowers to encourage a tidy appearance and extend the flowering period. However, leaving some spikes to mature can add autumn interest and provide seeds for wildlife. Cut back dead foliage in late autumn or early spring to allow for fresh growth.
Overwintering: Liatris spicata is fully hardy in the UK and does not require lifting for winter. In colder regions, a layer of mulch can help insulate the roots, though this is generally not necessary.
With its unique flowering spikes, pollinator-friendly blooms, and low-maintenance nature, Liatris spicata is a versatile and striking addition to UK gardens. Perfect for borders, naturalistic plantings, and cut flower arrangements, this plant brings lasting beauty and ecological benefits throughout the growing season.
