Overview

Lily Montego Bay - bulbs

Lily 'Montego Bay' is a striking Asiatic hybrid lily that dazzles with its vibrant orange-red blooms and subtle, exotic charm. Known for its bold colour and compact growth habit, this lily is perfect for adding a burst of warmth to borders, beds, and containers. Blooming from early to midsummer, 'Montego Bay' creates a show-stopping display that pairs beautifully with other bright or neutral-toned plants. This low-maintenance, pollen-free variety is an excellent choice for cut flower arrangements, adding a cheerful pop of colour indoors. Hardy and easy to grow in UK gardens, 'Montego Bay' is a stunning addition to any outdoor space.

The blooms of Lily 'Montego Bay' are a fiery orange-red with a satin-like sheen, featuring slightly recurved petals and a delicate speckling near the centre. Each bloom measures approximately 10-15cm in diameter and is supported by sturdy, upright stems. The flowers are pollen-free, making them ideal for indoor use as they won’t stain furniture or fabrics. These vibrant, flame-coloured flowers contrast beautifully with their dark green, lance-shaped foliage, creating a dramatic and elegant display in the garden.

How to Grow
Planting: Plant 'Montego Bay' lily bulbs in spring or autumn in a sunny to partially shaded spot with well-drained, fertile soil. Ensure the location is sheltered from strong winds to protect the upright stems. Plant bulbs 10-15cm deep and space them 15-20cm apart for a full and vibrant display.
Watering: Water thoroughly after planting to help the bulbs establish. During the growing season, keep the soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging, as lilies prefer well-drained conditions.
Feeding: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring as the shoots emerge, and feed again as the flower buds form. This will encourage strong growth and vibrant blooms.
Staking: While 'Montego Bay' is a compact variety, staking may be helpful in windy areas to support the stems and prevent bending. Use slender stakes or supports and tie the stems loosely as they grow.
Deadheading and Maintenance: Remove spent flowers to encourage the plant’s energy to return to the bulb and prolong the bloom period. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering, as this helps the bulbs store energy for the following year.
Overwintering: Lily 'Montego Bay' is hardy in the UK, but adding a layer of mulch in late autumn can provide additional protection for the bulbs during harsh winters. For container-grown lilies, move pots to a frost-free location if extreme cold is expected.

With its vivid orange-red blooms, compact growth, and easy care requirements, Lily 'Montego Bay' is a fantastic choice for UK gardens. Perfect for borders, containers, and cut flower arrangements, this lily adds a fiery, tropical touch to your outdoor and indoor displays.
