Overview
Liatris Spicata Bulbs
Liatris spicata, also known as Blazing Star or Gayfeather, is a unique and eye-catching perennial that brings vertical interest and vibrant colour to any garden. Known for its tall spikes of feathery flowers in shades of purple or white, this hardy plant blooms from midsummer to early autumn, providing a beautiful display that attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Perfect for borders, beds, and wildlife-friendly gardens, Liatris spicata is easy to grow and adds a striking architectural element to any planting scheme. It’s also ideal for cut flowers, both fresh and dried.
The flowers of Liatris spicata grow in dense, bottlebrush-like spikes that can reach up to 60-90cm in height. Each spike is covered in fluffy, lavender-purple blooms that open from the top down, creating a unique flowering pattern. These blooms are set against a backdrop of slender, grass-like foliage that adds texture and movement to the garden. The vibrant purple flower spikes make a stunning contrast with green foliage and other colourful perennials, adding height and drama to the garden through late summer. Eack pack contains Wildflower 'Butterfly' Mix, a welcome addition to any garden
How to Grow
Planting: Plant Liatris spicata bulbs (corms) in spring for summer flowering. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil; they will tolerate a bit of partial shade but prefer full sun for the best blooms. Plant the corms about 5-10cm deep and 10-15cm apart in groups for a more natural and full display.
Watering: Water the corms after planting to help them settle and establish. Liatris spicata is relatively drought-tolerant once established, but during dry spells, regular watering will encourage healthier growth and more vibrant blooms.
Feeding: A light application of a balanced fertiliser in early spring will support healthy growth. Avoid excessive fertilisation, as it can result in weaker stems that may require staking.
Staking: In exposed or windy areas, taller Liatris spicata may benefit from light staking to keep the flower spikes upright, although the plants are generally quite sturdy.
Deadheading and Maintenance: Deadhead spent flowers to encourage a tidier appearance and to prolong the blooming season. However, leaving some flower spikes can add visual interest to the autumn garden and provide food for birds. In late autumn, cut back the stems and foliage once they have died back.
Overwintering: Liatris spicata is hardy in the UK and doesn’t require lifting in winter. Adding a light mulch in colder areas can help protect the roots, but they generally survive winter conditions well without additional protection.
With its distinctive flower spikes and low-maintenance care, Liatris spicata is an ideal choice for gardeners looking to add height, colour, and pollinator-friendly plants to their outdoor space. This perennial brings drama and beauty to the garden, while its unique structure and vibrant colour make it a fantastic choice for both fresh and dried floral arrangements.
