Overview

Autumn Planting Pink Garlic

Pink garlic is 'juicier' and tends to have a milder flavour than white garlic when fresh. An essential flavouring for many recipes, garlic is easy to grow at home.

Garlic also acts as an insect repellent so is a  great companion for other plants in the garden

SOIL PREPARATION: Garlic requires a well-drained, fertile soil that will need to be deeply dug over before planting. For the best results, cultivate the soil and dig in some organic compost or manure.
PLANTING: Plant August to December. Break the garlic down into cloves. Prepare the rows 20cm apart and space the cloves 10cm apart and 5cm deep along each row. Press the cloves gently into the ground, tip facing upwards, cover them with a thin layer of soil and firm the soil around the clove. If planting in a container, allow 4 cloves per 15cm pot.
CARE: Keep the area weed-free by regular hoeing and ensure the cloves remain covered with soil. Keep them well-watered during the growing season. Stop watering when the cloves have swollen. Expose the top of the cloves to the light by gently pulling back the earth around them. Break off any flower stems that may appear.
HARVESTING: When the leaves turn yellow and the foliage collapses, lift the garlic straight away. Lift gently from underneath using a fork to ensure no damage to any bulbs. Remove any dirt, roots and brittle stems. Spread them out in a crate or on a sack to enable them to dry for 7-10 days. When dry they can be placed in nets or tied together and hung in a cool but frost-free place within a dry and well-ventilated environment.<br>These may then be stored for up to 6 months.

Plant as soon as possible after purchase. Keep in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place until planting. Keep from frost.

Grown from cultivated stock.
