Overview

Gladiolus Fiorentina

Gladiolus 'Fiorentina' is a stunning and elegant variety that brings a classic touch to summer gardens with its tall, graceful spikes of creamy white blooms tinged with a delicate blush of pink. Perfect for adding height and sophistication to borders, beds, and containers, this gladiolus variety blooms from mid to late summer, creating a timeless display that pairs beautifully with other pastel and vibrant plants. Ideal for cut flower arrangements, Gladiolus 'Fiorentina' adds a fresh, romantic charm indoors as well. Hardy in the UK with proper care, this variety is a reliable choice for gardeners looking to bring elegance to their outdoor spaces.

The blooms of Gladiolus 'Fiorentina' are soft white with a gentle hint of blush pink, creating a subtle and elegant appearance. Each flower spike bears multiple trumpet-shaped flowers along tall, slender stems that can reach up to 100-120cm in height. The blooms open sequentially from the bottom to the top of the stem, ensuring a long-lasting display of colour. These delicate blooms stand out beautifully against green foliage and make a graceful addition to any garden setting, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies.

How to Grow
Planting: Plant Gladiolus 'Fiorentina' bulbs in spring, after the risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil, as gladioli perform best in full sun. Plant each bulb 10-15cm deep and space them 10-15cm apart. For a fuller, more impactful display, plant in clusters or rows.
Watering: Water the bulbs well after planting to help them establish. During the growing season, keep the soil consistently moist, particularly in dry spells. Avoid waterlogging, as gladioli prefer well-drained conditions to prevent bulb rot.
Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every two weeks once shoots appear. Regular feeding will encourage lush foliage and promote large, vibrant blooms. Cease feeding once flowering is complete.
Staking: With their tall, slender stems, Gladiolus 'Fiorentina' may need staking, especially in windy areas. Insert stakes or plant supports at planting time to prevent bending and to keep the flowers upright as they bloom.
Deadheading and Maintenance: Remove faded flowers to encourage a tidy appearance and to extend the flowering period along the stem. Once flowering is complete, allow the foliage to die back naturally, as this will help the bulbs store energy for next year.
Overwintering: In colder regions of the UK, lift and store gladiolus bulbs after the foliage has died back. Dig up the bulbs carefully, allow them to dry, and store them in a cool, frost-free location until replanting in spring. In milder areas, you may be able to leave the bulbs in the ground with a layer of mulch for added winter protection.

With its soft white and pink-tinged blooms and elegant stature, Gladiolus 'Fiorentina' adds sophistication and beauty to UK gardens, providing a graceful display from mid to late summer. Perfect for both garden enjoyment and indoor floral arrangements, this gladiolus variety brings a touch of timeless romance to any outdoor space.
