How to Grow Bulbs
Planting: Plant Gladioli bulbs in spring, after the last frost, in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. For best results, plant in clusters or rows to create a bold, colourful display. Plant the bulbs about 10-15cm deep and space them 10-15cm apart. Gladioli do well in both borders and large containers.
Watering: Water the bulbs after planting to help them establish. Throughout the growing season, keep the soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging. In dry spells, water deeply to promote strong growth and vibrant blooms.
Feeding: Apply a balanced, liquid fertiliser every two weeks once the shoots begin to emerge. Regular feeding will encourage larger, more colourful blooms. Stop feeding once flowering is complete.
Staking: Gladioli grow tall and may need support, particularly in windy areas. Insert stakes or plant supports as the plants grow to keep the stems upright and prevent bending or breaking.
Deadheading and Maintenance: Remove faded flowers to encourage continuous blooming along the stem. After the last blooms fade, allow the foliage to die back naturally, as this helps the bulbs store energy for the next year’s growth.
Overwintering: In colder regions of the UK, lift and store gladioli bulbs after the foliage has died back. Carefully dig up the bulbs, allow them to dry, and store them in a cool, dry, frost-free place over winter. In milder areas, you can leave them in the ground with a layer of mulch for added protection.
