Dahlia 'Purple Gem' Bulb and Wildflower 'Butterfly' Mix Seeds

Dahlia 'Purple Gem' is a showstopper, bringing vibrant colour and drama to any garden with its vivid, deep purple blooms. This striking cactus dahlia variety is loved for its unique spiky petals and bold presence, making it a wonderful choice for borders, beds, or containers. It’s a prolific bloomer, offering a spectacular display from mid-summer until the first frost, and its tall stems make it a fantastic option for cut flower arrangements as well. Easy to grow and incredibly eye-catching, 'Purple Gem' is a must-have for gardeners seeking bold summer colour.

The blooms of Dahlia 'Purple Gem' are a rich, royal purple, standing out beautifully against green foliage. Each flower can reach up to 15-20cm in diameter, with distinct, pointed petals that form a spiky, starburst-like appearance. The cactus-style petals create a unique texture and depth, adding both interest and elegance to the garden. This deep purple hue remains vibrant throughout the season, bringing a touch of exotic beauty to any garden setting. Eack pack also contains Wildflower (Butterfly) Seed Mix, a welcome addition to any garden

How to Grow Bulbs
Planting: Start your Dahlia 'Purple Gem' tubers indoors in early spring, or plant them directly in the garden after the last frost. Choose a sunny location with well-drained, fertile soil. Plant the tubers about 10-15cm deep with the growth point facing upwards, and space them around 45-60cm apart to give each plant enough room.
Watering: Water lightly until shoots appear, then increase watering to keep the soil consistently moist during the growing season. Avoid overwatering, as dahlias dislike soggy conditions, but ensure they are well-watered in dry spells for healthy growth and flowering.
Feeding: Feed with a high-potassium fertiliser, like a tomato feed, once the buds start to form, and continue feeding every two to three weeks throughout the flowering period. This will encourage strong, healthy blooms.
Staking: 'Purple Gem' has tall, sturdy stems but benefits from support, especially in windy areas or if the blooms are heavy. Insert stakes when planting to avoid damaging the tubers later, and tie the stems loosely to the stakes as the plant grows.
Deadheading and Maintenance: Regularly deadhead faded blooms to encourage continuous flowering throughout the season. This will keep your dahlia producing fresh blooms well into autumn.
Overwintering: In colder regions, lift the tubers after the first frost. Cut back the stems, carefully lift the tubers, and allow them to dry. Store them in a cool, frost-free area in slightly damp compost or peat, ready to replant next spring.

With its bold colour and distinctive cactus-like flowers, Dahlia 'Purple Gem' will make a dramatic statement in any garden, providing a striking display from mid-summer to the first frost. Perfect for adding depth and vibrancy to borders and for creating show-stopping arrangements indoors.
