How to Grow Bulbs
Planting: Start your Dahlia 'Crazy Love' tubers indoors in early spring, or plant them directly outside after the last frost. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil. Plant the tubers about 10-15cm deep, with the ‘eye’ or growth point facing upwards, and space them around 45-60cm apart to allow room for growth.
Watering: Water sparingly until the shoots appear, then water regularly during the growing season. Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid overwatering as this can cause the tubers to rot. In dry weather, a good soaking once or twice a week is beneficial.
Feeding: Feed your dahlias with a high-potassium fertiliser, such as a tomato feed, once they begin to bloom. Regular feeding every two to three weeks will encourage large, vibrant blooms.
Staking: 'Crazy Love' produces large, heavy blooms, so it’s best to support the plant with stakes or plant supports. Insert the stakes when planting to avoid damaging the tubers later, and tie the stems loosely to support the flowers as they grow.
Deadheading and Maintenance: Regularly deadhead spent blooms to encourage new flowers and prolong the blooming season. Dahlias will bloom continuously until the first frost if well-maintained.
Overwintering: In colder regions of the UK, lift and store the tubers in autumn after the first frost. Cut back the stems, lift the tubers, and allow them to dry. Store them in a cool, frost-free place in slightly damp compost or peat over winter.
With its striking colour and generous blooms, Dahlia 'Crazy Love' is sure to be a standout in your garden, providing a beautiful show all summer long and making for elegant additions to indoor bouquets.
