Crocosmia Lucifer Bulbs and Wildflower 'Butterfly' Mix Seeds
Crocosmia 'Lucifer' is a striking choice for any garden, known for its vivid, flame-red blooms that add a dramatic splash of colour in mid to late summer. This hardy perennial is easy to grow and perfect for creating bold, eye-catching displays in borders, beds, or even large containers. With its arching flower spikes and lush, sword-like foliage, Crocosmia 'Lucifer' is a great option for attracting pollinators, adding height and movement to your garden, and creating an exotic, tropical look that's sure to impress.
The blooms of Crocosmia 'Lucifer' are a brilliant, fiery red, forming in clusters along tall, arching stems that can reach up to 1.2 metres in height. Each flower has a tubular shape, making it especially attractive to pollinators like bees and butterflies. The vibrant red colour deepens as the summer progresses, giving way to a striking contrast against the plant’s dark green, sword-like leaves. The flowers last well into late summer, making 'Lucifer' a wonderful addition to borders and cutting gardens. Included in each pack is Wildflower (Butterfly) Seed Mix, a welcome addition to any garden.
How to Grow Bulbs
Planting: Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well-drained soil. Crocosmia 'Lucifer' grows best in fertile, slightly acidic soil. Plant the bulbs (corms) about 8-10cm deep and space them around 10-15cm apart in clusters for the best effect.
Watering: Water regularly during the growing season, especially in dry spells. While Crocosmia 'Lucifer' is quite drought-tolerant once established, consistent moisture will encourage strong, healthy growth and better blooms.
Feeding: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage lush foliage and vibrant flowers. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to lush foliage at the expense of blooms.
Mulching: In autumn, apply a layer of mulch to protect the bulbs over winter, particularly in colder regions. Mulching will help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and provide extra insulation.
Pruning and Maintenance: After flowering, allow the foliage to die back naturally, as this will help the bulbs store energy for the next season. Cut back any dead stems and leaves in late autumn or early spring.
Dividing: Every few years, divide clumps of Crocosmia 'Lucifer' in spring to rejuvenate the plants and prevent overcrowding. This will also allow you to spread these beautiful flowers to other parts of your garden.
With its vibrant red blooms and hardy nature, Crocosmia 'Lucifer' is an ideal choice for adding height, colour, and a touch of drama to UK gardens, while attracting plenty of pollinators to your summer borders.
